- Plan out a work schedule. This include daily time set aside to work on the dissertation and to work on editing/note taking. You should plan this schedule as soon as you receive approval for your topic so that you know exactly how much time you have left and what else you need to accomplish.
- Meet with your advisor regularly. Your advisor is there to lend a hand, but they are just as busy as you are which means you should respect their time by establishing a work/meeting schedule with them as soon as you set out to work on the dissertation. Try to create a schedule such as turning in one chapter each week on Friday, giving your advisor the weekend to review, and meeting again the following Tuesday for their notes. This will give you some time to incorporate what they have to say and will keep you on point for meeting your deadlines.
- Work a little bit each day. This is important for such a large undertaking. You want to make sure that you are working regularly, especially if you want to meet all of your goals. Without regular work you will be unable to stay on point and only through daily contributions to the final product can you hope to schedule in enough time to really get things done.
- Keep a separate document on your computer for bibliographic information and on days where your brain is just unable to focus, work on editing the references so that at least some important work is being done. If you write down a citation as you are taking notes spend a few minutes at the end of the working period to transfer them to your bibliographic page.
- When you edit, take at least one day off. This is important to your ability to return to the paper with a fresh perspective and fresh focus. By taking time off in between each subsequent draft, you afford yourself the opportunity to catch mistakes that you otherwise might have missed in previous editing sessions.
